Private ultrasound scans at Victoria Medical in Victoria, London SW1V are performed by specialist sonographers using high-resolution diagnostic equipment. Pelvic, abdominal, musculoskeletal (MSK), vascular, and DVT scans are available with same-day appointments and written reports. No GP referral is required.
Ultrasound imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of internal structures. It is non-invasive, does not use ionising radiation, and provides immediate diagnostic information. For many clinical presentations β pelvic pain, abdominal symptoms, joint or tendon problems, and leg swelling β ultrasound is the first-line imaging investigation of choice.
At Victoria Medical, ultrasound scans are performed by specialist sonographers with extensive experience in gynaecological, abdominal, musculoskeletal, and vascular imaging. All scans are reported on the same day, and a written report is provided before you leave the clinic. Urgent findings are communicated to your referring clinician immediately.
Ultrasound appointments are available Monday to Saturday at 170 Vauxhall Bridge Road, Victoria SW1V 1DX. No GP referral is required, though we recommend a brief GP or specialist consultation before your scan if you are unsure which type of scan is most appropriate for your symptoms.

Pelvic Ultrasound Scans
Pelvic ultrasound is the most commonly requested scan at Victoria Medical. For women, a combined transabdominal (TA) and transvaginal (TV) approach provides the most comprehensive assessment of the uterus, endometrium, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. The transvaginal component uses a small probe inserted into the vagina to obtain higher-resolution images of the pelvic organs β it is not painful, though some women find it mildly uncomfortable.
A pelvic ultrasound can identify fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometrial thickening, polycystic ovaries, and structural abnormalities of the uterus. It is also used to assess ovarian reserve (antral follicle count) in women undergoing fertility assessment, and to monitor follicle development in women undergoing ovarian stimulation.
For men, a transabdominal pelvic ultrasound assesses the prostate, seminal vesicles, and bladder. It is indicated for men with urinary symptoms, elevated PSA, or suspected prostate pathology.
- Transabdominal (TA) ultrasound β external probe on the lower abdomen
- Transvaginal (TV) ultrasound β small internal probe for higher resolution (women)
- Combined TA + TV β standard approach for comprehensive pelvic assessment
- Antral follicle count (AFC) β ovarian reserve assessment for fertility
- Saline infusion sonography (SIS) β assessment of the uterine cavity
Abdominal Ultrasound Scans
An abdominal ultrasound provides a comprehensive assessment of the solid and hollow organs of the abdomen. It is the first-line investigation for abdominal pain, abnormal liver function tests, jaundice, right upper quadrant pain, and suspected gallstones.
The scan assesses the liver (size, texture, focal lesions), gallbladder (gallstones, polyps, wall thickening), bile ducts, kidneys (size, cortical thickness, hydronephrosis, stones), spleen, and pancreas. The abdominal aorta is also assessed for aneurysm, which is particularly relevant for men over 65 and those with cardiovascular risk factors.
Please fast for 4β6 hours before an abdominal ultrasound (water is permitted) to ensure the gallbladder is adequately distended and gas in the bowel is minimised.
Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound Scans
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a highly effective imaging modality for the assessment of soft tissue structures β tendons, ligaments, muscles, bursae, and peripheral nerves. It provides real-time, dynamic imaging that allows the sonographer to assess structures during movement, which is not possible with MRI.
MSK ultrasound is particularly valuable for the assessment of rotator cuff tears, tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, and joint effusions. It can also guide injections β corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid, or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) β with precision.
- Shoulder β rotator cuff tears, subacromial bursitis, biceps tendon pathology
- Elbow β lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), medial epicondylitis (golfer's elbow)
- Wrist and hand β carpal tunnel syndrome, de Quervain's tenosynovitis, ganglion cysts
- Hip β greater trochanteric bursitis, iliopsoas tendinopathy, hip joint effusion
- Knee β patellar tendinopathy, quadriceps tendon, meniscal cysts, joint effusion
- Ankle and foot β Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, peroneal tendon pathology
Vascular and DVT Ultrasound Scans
Vascular ultrasound uses Doppler technology to assess blood flow in arteries and veins. It is the primary investigation for suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT), peripheral arterial disease, carotid artery stenosis, and varicose veins.
A DVT scan is one of the most time-sensitive investigations we perform. Suspected DVT β typically presenting with unilateral leg swelling, pain, and warmth β requires same-day assessment. At Victoria Medical, urgent DVT scans are available Monday to Saturday, with results provided immediately after the scan.
If a DVT is confirmed on ultrasound, we arrange immediate referral to an appropriate clinical team for anticoagulation management, and provide a detailed clinical summary for the receiving team.
How to Prepare for Your Ultrasound Scan
Preparation requirements vary depending on the type of scan. Please follow the specific instructions for your scan type to ensure the best possible image quality.
| Scan Type | Preparation Required |

| MSK | No preparation required |
