Pelvic Ultrasound Scans
Pelvic ultrasound is the most commonly requested scan at Victoria Medical. For women, a combined transabdominal (TA) and transvaginal (TV) approach provides the most comprehensive assessment of the uterus, endometrium, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. The transvaginal component uses a small probe inserted into the vagina to obtain higher-resolution images of the pelvic organs — it is not painful, though some women find it mildly uncomfortable.
A pelvic ultrasound can identify fibroids, ovarian cysts, endometrial thickening, polycystic ovaries, and structural abnormalities of the uterus. It is also used to assess ovarian reserve (antral follicle count) in women undergoing fertility assessment, and to monitor follicle development in women undergoing ovarian stimulation.
For men, a transabdominal pelvic ultrasound assesses the prostate, seminal vesicles, and bladder. It is indicated for men with urinary symptoms, elevated PSA, or suspected prostate pathology.

Abdominal Ultrasound Scans
An abdominal ultrasound provides a comprehensive assessment of the solid and hollow organs of the abdomen. It is the first-line investigation for abdominal pain, abnormal liver function tests, jaundice, right upper quadrant pain, and suspected gallstones.
The scan assesses the liver (size, texture, focal lesions), gallbladder (gallstones, polyps, wall thickening), bile ducts, kidneys (size, cortical thickness, hydronephrosis, stones), spleen, and pancreas. The abdominal aorta is also assessed for aneurysm, which is particularly relevant for men over 65 and those with cardiovascular risk factors.
Please fast for 4–6 hours before an abdominal ultrasound (water is permitted) to ensure the gallbladder is adequately distended and gas in the bowel is minimised.
Musculoskeletal (MSK) Ultrasound Scans
Musculoskeletal ultrasound is a highly effective imaging modality for the assessment of soft tissue structures — tendons, ligaments, muscles, bursae, and peripheral nerves. It provides real-time, dynamic imaging that allows the sonographer to assess structures during movement, which is not possible with MRI.
MSK ultrasound is particularly valuable for the assessment of rotator cuff tears, tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinopathy, patellar tendinopathy, and joint effusions. It can also guide injections — corticosteroid, hyaluronic acid, or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) — with precision.

Vascular and DVT Ultrasound Scans
Vascular ultrasound uses Doppler technology to assess blood flow in arteries and veins. It is the primary investigation for suspected deep vein thrombosis (DVT), peripheral arterial disease, carotid artery stenosis, and varicose veins.
A DVT scan is one of the most time-sensitive investigations we perform. Suspected DVT — typically presenting with unilateral leg swelling, pain, and warmth — requires same-day assessment. At Victoria Medical, urgent DVT scans are available Monday to Saturday, with results provided immediately after the scan.
If a DVT is confirmed on ultrasound, we arrange immediate referral to an appropriate clinical team for anticoagulation management, and provide a detailed clinical summary for the receiving team.
