A neck lump ultrasound assesses a palpable lump or swelling in the neck, including lymph-node, thyroid-region and superficial soft-tissue structures. It supports, but does not replace, an appropriate clinical examination and referral pathway.

Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation to create real-time images. Your examination is selected around your symptoms, clinical history and the body area that needs assessment.

At Victoria Medical, the scan is performed through an appropriate clinical pathway. The sonographer will explain the practical steps, and you will receive clear information about reporting and any recommended follow-up.

What a Neck Lump Ultrasound Can Assess

Neck lumps need an appropriate clinical pathway. Ultrasound can describe visible features, but further review may be recommended depending on your age, symptoms, examination and scan findings.

Area assessedWhy it may be examined
Superficial lumpSize, location and visible ultrasound features
Lymph nodesAppearance of relevant neck lymph nodes
Thyroid regionRelevant adjacent structures where clinically indicated

Preparation Before Your Appointment

No fasting or bladder preparation is needed. Please wear a top that allows access to the lower face and neck, and remove necklaces where possible.

Preparation summary: No special preparation — Wear an open-neck top and remove necklaces if possible.

What Happens During the Scan

You will lie back with the neck gently extended. Gel is applied to the skin and a probe is moved across the area of concern and surrounding structures.

  • Bring any relevant referral letter, previous scan report or test result if you have one.
  • Wear clothing that allows straightforward access to the area being examined.
  • Tell the clinical team if you are unsure whether this is the right scan for your symptoms.

Results and Next Steps

The examination forms one part of your clinical assessment. Your report and the appropriate next step will depend on the scan findings, your symptoms and relevant history. We can help arrange GP, specialist or urgent-care follow-up where this is clinically appropriate.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Help

Seek urgent help for difficulty breathing or swallowing, rapidly increasing swelling, a neck lump with severe systemic illness, or any sudden deterioration. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent unexplained neck lump.

Ultrasound is not a substitute for emergency assessment. If symptoms are severe, sudden, worsening or accompanied by fainting, breathing difficulty, fever, heavy bleeding or acute testicular pain, seek urgent medical help.
