An ovarian ultrasound assesses the ovaries and surrounding adnexal structures. It may be performed externally, internally or as a combined pelvic examination depending on your symptoms and consent.

Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation to create real-time images. Your examination is selected around your symptoms, clinical history and the body area that needs assessment.

At Victoria Medical, the scan is performed through an appropriate clinical pathway. The sonographer will explain the practical steps, and you will receive clear information about reporting and any recommended follow-up.

What a Ovarian Ultrasound Can Assess

It can support assessment of ovarian cysts, pelvic pain, bloating, irregular cycles or PCOS-related features. A scan result must be interpreted alongside symptoms and medical history.

Area assessedWhy it may be examined
OvariesSize, follicles, cysts and visible masses
Adnexal regionStructures around the ovaries
PelvisOther pelvic features relevant to symptoms

Preparation Before Your Appointment

Please arrive with a comfortably full bladder unless the clinic advises otherwise. If an internal component is appropriate and you consent, you may be asked to empty your bladder before that part of the examination.

Preparation summary: Full bladder first — You may then be asked to empty it for an internal scan.

What Happens During the Scan

The sonographer begins with the approach that is appropriate for your referral or symptoms. They will explain what can and cannot be concluded from the scan and how results will be communicated.

  • Bring any relevant referral letter, previous scan report or test result if you have one.
  • Wear clothing that allows straightforward access to the area being examined.
  • Tell the clinical team if you are unsure whether this is the right scan for your symptoms.

Results and Next Steps

The examination forms one part of your clinical assessment. Your report and the appropriate next step will depend on the scan findings, your symptoms and relevant history. We can help arrange GP, specialist or urgent-care follow-up where this is clinically appropriate.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Help

Seek urgent assessment for severe sudden pelvic pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, fever with pelvic pain or a rapidly worsening condition.

Ultrasound is not a substitute for emergency assessment. If symptoms are severe, sudden, worsening or accompanied by fainting, breathing difficulty, fever, heavy bleeding or acute testicular pain, seek urgent medical help.
