A hernia ultrasound is a targeted scan that may help assess a suspected abdominal-wall or groin hernia when the clinical question is suitable. It does not replace urgent surgical assessment if a lump is painful, cannot be pushed back, or occurs with vomiting or severe abdominal pain.

I use this page to explain the purpose and limits of a hernia ultrasound. The scan may show a defect or tissue movement in the abdominal wall or groin, often while you change position or perform a gentle manoeuvre as directed by the clinician.

A visible lump does not always cause the pain, and a scan result does not decide treatment on its own. Your symptoms, examination and surgical advice guide the next step.

What the scan may assess

Ultrasound can be useful when a clinician needs to assess a focused abdominal-wall or groin concern. Dynamic imaging may be used because some hernias are easier to demonstrate with a change in position or pressure.

QuestionWhat a clinician may consider
A lump appears with standing or coughingFocused examination and dynamic ultrasound where appropriate
A groin pain pattern is unclearClinical review because pain may have several causes
A prior repair has new local symptomsSurgical or GP assessment, with imaging if it answers a defined question
Painful irreducible lump or vomitingEmergency assessment rather than routine imaging

What happens on the day

The clinician asks about the lump, previous operations, pain pattern and symptoms such as bowel change or vomiting. They may scan while you lie down and while you stand. The exact technique depends on the area and the clinical question.

Urgent symptoms need a different route

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe pain, a tender lump that will not reduce, vomiting, abdominal swelling, fever, fainting or marked deterioration. These symptoms can need urgent surgical assessment.

Call 999 or attend A&E if severe pain, vomiting or a trapped painful lump suggests an emergency. Do not wait for a routine ultrasound appointment.
