A 3D or 4D baby scan creates volume or moving ultrasound images when suitable views are available. It can be an additional imaging experience, but it is not an anomaly scan and cannot rule out fetal conditions or replace NHS antenatal screening.

I recommend being clear about the purpose before you book. 3D and 4D images depend on fetal position, gestation, amniotic fluid, placental position and image conditions, so an ideal image cannot be guaranteed.

Your routine maternity screening and any clinically indicated scan remain the appropriate routes for questions about fetal anatomy, growth or wellbeing.

What 3D and 4D baby scans can and cannot show

3D imaging creates a volume-rendered view, while 4D refers to moving 3D imaging over time. They can provide additional visualisation in suitable circumstances. They do not replace the structured views and clinical interpretation used in diagnostic fetal screening.

PurposeAppropriate route

Concern about fetal anatomyNHS screening or maternity specialist pathway
Concern about growth or wellbeingAntenatal pathway advised by the maternity team
Pain, bleeding or reduced movementsUrgent maternity assessment rather than routine imaging

Why image quality can vary

The view may be affected by fetal position, gestational stage and normal technical limitations. The team should explain what can be seen on the day and should not promise a particular image or diagnostic conclusion.

Do not delay maternity assessment

Pain, bleeding, reduced movements, severe headache, visual disturbance, fainting or feeling unwell needs urgent maternity or emergency advice. A routine 3D or 4D appointment is not a substitute for clinical assessment.

3D and 4D imaging is not an anomaly-screening service. Follow your NHS maternity pathway for screening, and use maternity triage or emergency care for acute symptoms.
