What a Private Ankle and Foot Ultrasound Scan Can Assess
This scan can support a focused soft-tissue assessment for persistent ankle or foot symptoms, a suspected tendon problem, heel pain, swelling or a local lump. The booking team should confirm the scan question, especially after a recent injury.

What Ultrasound May Not Show Completely
Ultrasound does not rule out all fractures, deep-joint injuries, complex ligament injury or every cause of foot pain. A significant injury or inability to bear weight may need urgent assessment, X-ray or another investigation before a routine scan.
A normal or limited ultrasound result does not replace a clinical assessment when pain, weakness, instability or loss of function persists.
How to Prepare
No fasting or bladder preparation is needed. Wear loose trousers, shorts or footwear that you can remove easily. Please remove ankle jewellery if comfortable and bring relevant footwear or orthoses only if the clinic has asked you to.
- Bring relevant referral letters, previous imaging reports or physiotherapy information if you have them.
- Wear loose clothing or sportswear that allows direct access to the scan area.
- Tell the team before the appointment if you cannot move the area comfortably or have had recent surgery or an injection.
What Happens During the Scan
You will sit or lie comfortably with the foot supported. The sonographer applies gel and scans the relevant area. They may ask you to point, flex or move the foot gently when this is safe and helps assess a tendon dynamically.
Results and the Next Clinical Step
The sonographer records the images needed for the clinical question. Your report must be interpreted with your symptoms and examination findings. Depending on the result, the next step may be self-management advice, physiotherapy, a GP review, specialist review or a different investigation.

Seek urgent medical help for a deformed ankle or foot, inability to bear weight after significant injury, a cold, pale or numb foot, severe rapidly increasing swelling, an open wound, fever with spreading redness or severe worsening pain. Call 999 for a life-threatening emergency.
