A dating and viability scan is a pregnancy ultrasound appointment used to address a defined question about pregnancy timing and development. The team confirms the gestational window, symptoms and suitable clinical pathway before booking.
Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation to create real-time images. The clinic team confirms the examination, current preparation requirement and appropriate clinical pathway before an appointment is arranged.
A scan answers a defined imaging question. Your symptoms, history and examination still matter, and the report may lead to GP, specialist, antenatal, breast or urgent-care follow-up where that is clinically appropriate.

What a Private Dating and Viability Scan Can Assess
This page covers a focused dating or viability imaging question. Accurate early dating supports later growth assessment, but a scan result must always be considered with the whole clinical picture and the timing of the examination.
| Area or question | What the scan may help assess |
|---|---|
| Pregnancy dating | Measurements and findings interpreted in the context of the stated dates and approved protocol |
| Pregnancy development | Relevant features contributing to an appropriate viability assessment |
| Follow-up need | Whether the result needs a routine, repeat or urgent clinical pathway |
Preparation Before Your Appointment
Share your last menstrual period, relevant test results and any previous scan information when you contact the clinic. The team will provide the current preparation instructions after confirming gestation and the examination approach.

What Happens During the Scan
The sonographer confirms the scan question and explains the planned approach. The examination and reporting route follow the agreed clinical protocol; you can ask questions before and during the appointment.
- Bring relevant referral letters, prior imaging reports or test results if you have them.
- Tell the sonographer about a change in symptoms, recent treatment or anything that may affect the examination.
- Ask before the scan if you are unsure whether this is the right appointment for your clinical question.
Results and Next Steps
The report explains the imaging findings in the context of the available dates. Depending on the result, the next step may be routine antenatal care, repeat imaging, GP or maternity review, or an urgent pathway if symptoms or findings require it.
When to Use an Urgent Pathway Instead
Use urgent maternity or emergency care instead of waiting for a dating scan if you have heavy bleeding, severe or worsening pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, collapse or you feel seriously unwell.
A routine private ultrasound appointment must not delay urgent assessment. If symptoms are severe, sudden, worsening or you feel seriously unwell, use the appropriate NHS urgent or emergency route.
