What a Private Elbow Ultrasound Scan Can Assess
This scan can be useful for persistent outer or inner elbow pain, local tendon symptoms, a palpable lump, selected nerve-related questions or a clinically appropriate injury assessment. It does not replace an urgent review after a serious fall, direct trauma or a rapid loss of function.

What Ultrasound May Not Show Completely
Ultrasound does not show every cause of elbow pain. Some bone, cartilage, deep-joint, complex instability and nerve conditions need clinical assessment and may require X-ray, MRI, nerve testing or specialist review instead.
A normal or limited ultrasound result does not replace a clinical assessment when pain, weakness, instability or loss of function persists.
How to Prepare
No fasting or bladder preparation is needed. Wear a loose top or short sleeves so the elbow can be exposed. Remove watches or restrictive jewellery if they are close to the area being examined.
- Bring relevant referral letters, previous imaging reports or physiotherapy information if you have them.
- Wear loose clothing or sportswear that allows direct access to the scan area.
- Tell the team before the appointment if you cannot move the area comfortably or have had recent surgery or an injection.
What Happens During the Scan
You will sit or lie in a position that supports the arm. The sonographer applies gel and scans the relevant side of the elbow. Where safe, they may ask you to bend, straighten or rotate the forearm gently so a structure can be seen during movement.
Results and the Next Clinical Step
The sonographer records the images needed for the clinical question. Your report must be interpreted with your symptoms and examination findings. Depending on the result, the next step may be self-management advice, physiotherapy, a GP review, specialist review or a different investigation.
