A lumps and bumps ultrasound examines a defined superficial lump or area of swelling. It can describe visible ultrasound features, but it cannot replace a clinical assessment or the specialist pathway needed for a concerning lump.
Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation to create real-time images. The clinic team confirms the examination, current preparation requirement and appropriate clinical pathway before an appointment is arranged.
A scan answers a defined imaging question. Your symptoms, history and examination still matter, and the report may lead to GP, specialist, antenatal, breast or urgent-care follow-up where that is clinically appropriate.

What a Private Lumps and Bumps Ultrasound Scan Can Assess
This scan can support assessment of a clinically selected superficial mass or swelling, such as a possible cyst, lipoma or other localised soft-tissue concern. A clinician must interpret the scan with the examination findings and the pattern of change over time.
| Area or question | What the scan may help assess |
|---|---|
| Superficial lump | Location, size and visible ultrasound characteristics |
| Nearby soft tissues | Relevant tissue planes around the area of concern |
| Blood flow where relevant | Doppler assessment may be used when it helps answer the clinical question |
Preparation Before Your Appointment
No fasting or bladder preparation is required. Wear clothing that makes the relevant area accessible. If you have noticed growth, pain, skin change, a previous scan or a prior clinical opinion, bring that information to the appointment.
Preparation summary: No special preparation — Wear clothing that allows access to the area of concern and bring any prior imaging or clinic letters.
What Happens During the Scan
The sonographer applies gel directly over and around the area of concern. A small probe captures images from more than one angle. The examination is external and often takes around 20–30 minutes.
- Bring relevant referral letters, prior imaging reports or test results if you have them.
- Tell the sonographer about a change in symptoms, recent treatment or anything that may affect the examination.
- Ask before the scan if you are unsure whether this is the right appointment for your clinical question.
Results and Next Steps
The report describes the examined area and supports the next clinical decision. Your clinician may advise observation, a GP review, further imaging, a biopsy discussion or a specialist referral depending on the result and clinical context.
When to Use an Urgent Pathway Instead
A lump that is rapidly enlarging, hard, fixed, deep, persistently painful, ulcerated, associated with unexplained weight loss or accompanied by significant illness needs prompt clinical assessment. Do not use a routine scan to delay that pathway.
A routine private ultrasound appointment must not delay urgent assessment. If symptoms are severe, sudden, worsening or you feel seriously unwell, use the appropriate NHS urgent or emergency route.
