Ultrasound Scan Results: What Happens Next?

A scan report is an important part of assessment, but it should be interpreted alongside your symptoms and clinical history.

After an ultrasound, you may receive an initial explanation on the day and a formal report according to the scan pathway. The next step depends on why the scan was requested and what it shows: some findings need no action, while others may need GP review, specialist input or further tests.

Ultrasound is excellent for many questions involving organs, blood flow, soft tissues and pelvic structures. It does not answer every diagnostic question, and a normal scan does not always explain every symptom.

Knowing what to expect after your scan can reduce anxiety and help you arrange the right follow-up.

How results are usually reviewed

The person performing or reporting the scan describes the imaging findings. Your referring clinician then places the report in the context of your symptoms, examination and any blood or urine tests.

Incidental findingClarify whether monitoring or further characterisation is needed

Questions to ask about your report

It is reasonable to ask what the finding means for you, whether it explains your symptoms, whether any follow-up is needed and when to seek help sooner.

  • What did the scan assess?
  • Does the report explain my symptoms?
  • Do I need blood tests, another scan or a specialist review?
  • What symptoms should prompt earlier contact?
  • How will I receive a copy of my report?

When symptoms still need review

Arrange follow-up if symptoms persist, worsen or do not fit with the scan result. Your clinician may consider a different test, repeat assessment or referral depending on the situation.
