Gender, growth and presentation scans are not interchangeable. A gender scan may assess fetal sex when a suitable view is available; a growth pathway addresses selected fetal measurements; and a presentation scan assesses fetal lie or position when that is the relevant clinical question. The clinic confirms the purpose, gestational suitability and result pathway before a private scan is booked.
I advise starting with the reason for the scan and your gestational stage. Your maternity team is the right source of advice for clinical questions about growth, wellbeing, anatomy, labour or urgent symptoms.
This guide is not a replacement for maternity triage. Pain, bleeding, reduced movements, severe headache, visual symptoms, fainting or feeling unwell needs urgent maternity or emergency advice.

Each scan has a focused purpose. A clear explanation before booking helps prevent a reassurance appointment being mistaken for diagnostic screening.
| Scan question | What it may assess | What it does not replace |
|---|---|---|
| Gender | Fetal sex when a suitable view is available | Anomaly screening, growth assessment or maternity triage |
| Growth | Selected measurements within an antenatal pathway | A complete explanation for all symptoms or a substitute for clinical review |
| Presentation | Fetal lie or position at the relevant stage | A delivery decision or labour-care advice in isolation |
How to choose the right route
If you are following an NHS maternity pathway, discuss a growth, presentation or wellbeing question with your midwife or maternity team. If you are considering a private appointment, ask the clinic to confirm the scan purpose, gestational suitability and how any finding would be followed up.
Booking, results and maternity follow-up
Before an appointment is finalised, the clinic confirms the focused purpose of the scan, preparation and the booking route. Results are explained within the limits of the examination. Reporting, result-sharing and any onward maternity follow-up depend on the clinical context and are confirmed at booking. Your maternity team remains the appropriate route for growth, wellbeing, labour and delivery planning.
When to use urgent maternity care
Seek urgent advice for pain, heavy bleeding, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, reduced movements, severe headache, visual disturbance, suspected ruptured membranes, possible labour or a sudden deterioration.
Do not use a routine pregnancy scan to delay maternity triage or emergency care. Contact your maternity unit, NHS 111 or 999 as appropriate.
