A DVT ultrasound uses Doppler imaging to assess the deep veins of the leg when symptoms such as new one-sided swelling, pain, warmth or tenderness raise concern about a blood clot.

Ultrasound uses sound waves rather than ionising radiation to create real-time images. Your examination is selected around your symptoms, clinical history and the body area that needs assessment.

At Victoria Medical, the scan is performed through an appropriate clinical pathway. The sonographer will explain the practical steps, and you will receive clear information about reporting and any recommended follow-up.

What a DVT Ultrasound Scan Can Assess

This is a time-sensitive examination. The most appropriate pathway depends on your symptoms and risk factors; the clinic team can advise on urgency, but emergency symptoms require urgent services.

Area assessedWhy it may be examined
Deep veinsCompressibility and blood-flow features in the leg veins
Symptom areaRelevant veins in the painful or swollen limb
Other visible findingsSome alternative soft-tissue causes of symptoms

Preparation Before Your Appointment

No fasting or bladder preparation is needed. Please wear loose clothing and bring a list of medicines, especially anticoagulants, if you take them.

What Happens During the Scan

Gel is applied to the leg and a probe is moved along the relevant veins. Gentle pressure is used as part of the assessment. The team will explain the next step once the examination is complete.

  • Bring any relevant referral letter, previous scan report or test result if you have one.
  • Wear clothing that allows straightforward access to the area being examined.
  • Tell the clinical team if you are unsure whether this is the right scan for your symptoms.

Results and Next Steps

The examination forms one part of your clinical assessment. Your report and the appropriate next step will depend on the scan findings, your symptoms and relevant history. We can help arrange GP, specialist or urgent-care follow-up where this is clinically appropriate.

When to Seek Urgent Medical Help

Call 999 immediately for chest pain, shortness of breath, coughing blood, collapse or severe sudden deterioration. For new one-sided leg swelling or pain, contact the clinic or an urgent medical service without delay.

Ultrasound is not a substitute for emergency assessment. If symptoms are severe, sudden, worsening or accompanied by fainting, breathing difficulty, fever, heavy bleeding or acute testicular pain, seek urgent medical help.
