
What Is a Vascular Ultrasound (Doppler Scan)?
Doppler vascular ultrasound is the gold standard for assessing blood flow, detecting DVT, and evaluating carotid and peripheral arterial disease β without radiation or contrast agents.
In brief: A vascular Doppler ultrasound combines structural imaging with real-time blood flow measurement. How Doppler Ultrasound Works
Standard B-mode ultrasound creates grey-scale images of tissue anatomy. Doppler ultrasound adds a second layer of information by measuring the frequency shift of sound waves reflected from moving blood cells β the Doppler effect. This allows the scanner to calculate blood flow velocity and direction, and to display it as a colour map (colour Doppler) or waveform (spectral Doppler). The combination of anatomical and flow information makes vascular ultrasound uniquely powerful for diagnosing both structural and haemodynamic vascular disease.

Is a Doppler ultrasound the same as a vascular ultrasound?
Doppler ultrasound is a technique used within vascular ultrasound that measures the speed and direction of blood flow. A vascular ultrasound typically combines B-mode imaging (which shows anatomy) with Doppler (which shows blood flow). The terms are often used interchangeably.
Do I need a GP referral for a private vascular ultrasound?
No. At Victoria Medical you can self-refer for a private vascular Doppler scan without a GP referral. If you have symptoms of DVT β leg pain, swelling, and warmth β same-day assessment is available.
How long does a vascular ultrasound take?
A focused lower limb DVT scan typically takes 20β30 minutes. A more comprehensive vascular assessment covering multiple areas may take 45β60 minutes.
Is a vascular ultrasound painful?
No. The scan is entirely painless. The sonographer applies gel to the skin and moves a probe over the area. For DVT assessment, the probe may apply gentle compression to the veins, which is usually well tolerated.
When should I seek urgent assessment for suspected DVT?
If you have sudden leg pain, swelling, warmth, and redness β particularly after long travel, surgery, or immobility β seek same-day assessment. DVT can progress to pulmonary embolism (PE), which is a medical emergency. Do not wait for a routine appointment.
