What UKAS Accreditation Means for Your Test Results

Laboratory quality systems support reliable testing, but results still need to be interpreted alongside your symptoms and medical history.

UKAS accreditation is an independent assessment of whether a laboratory meets recognised standards for the activities within its accredited scope. It supports confidence in laboratory processes, but it does not make a result self-explanatory or replace clinical review.

When choosing private testing, patients reasonably want to know how samples are handled, analysed and reported. Accreditation relates to systems such as competence, quality control, traceability and continual improvement.

Always ask which laboratory processes your test, what turnaround time applies and how your result will be reviewed if it is unexpected or abnormal.

What accreditation can indicate

Accreditation assesses defined activities against an agreed standard. The relevant scope matters: a laboratory may be accredited for some tests or processes but not every conceivable activity.

Quality elementWhy it matters to patients
Staff competenceTesting is performed within documented systems.
Quality controlProcesses monitor analytical performance.
TraceabilitySamples and reports can be tracked through the process.
External assessmentThe laboratory is assessed against the relevant accredited scope.

Why a result is not a diagnosis on its own

Laboratory reference ranges are based on populations and methods. A value can be outside a range without proving disease, while a value within a range does not always explain symptoms.

A private GP or appropriate specialist can put results in context, consider whether repeat testing is needed and explain proportionate next steps.

Questions to ask before private testing

A clear testing pathway should be transparent about what is included and what happens next.

  • Which laboratory processes the sample?
  • What is the expected turnaround time?
  • Is clinical interpretation included?
  • What happens if a result is abnormal or needs repeating?
  • Will my results be shared with me securely?
