Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring records multiple readings over a day and night, helping a clinician assess blood-pressure patterns beyond a single clinic measurement.
It can be considered when readings vary, when confirmation is needed, or when the pattern of blood pressure through daily activity and sleep is clinically relevant. Your clinician will advise whether it is appropriate for you.
It is not an emergency test. Very high readings with severe headache, chest pain, breathlessness, neurological symptoms or acute illness require urgent medical assessment.

Why a 24-hour profile can help
Clinic readings may not reflect every person’s usual pattern. A day-and-night recording can give more information about variation, daytime readings and overnight readings. Results are interpreted using the clinical context and agreed guideline approach.
| Situation | How monitoring may contribute | What remains important |
|---|---|---|
| Variable clinic readings | Provides repeated readings over time | Correct cuff technique and clinical context |
| Possible white-coat effect | Compares out-of-clinic pattern | Follow-up discussion and risk assessment |
| Treatment review | Shows response across normal activity | Medication changes are made by the responsible clinician |
During the recording
A cuff and small recorder are worn for the confirmed period. The device inflates at intervals. The team explains clothing, bathing, activity and sleep instructions, along with how to return it.
Results and next steps
The report supports—not replaces—a full cardiovascular assessment. Depending on your history, the clinician may discuss lifestyle, blood tests, ECG, monitoring or further review.
